Sport England has revealed it is "currently reviewing" how it measures sports participation across the country as part of its new legacy strategy from the London 2012 Games.

It comes after a target of one million more people taking part in sport for at least 30 minutes three times a week, introduced by the previous Labour administration, was scrapped.

Earlier this year, culture secretary Jeremy Hunt and Sport England announced details of the five-year youth and community strategy, which is to receive more than £1bn of funding.

National Lottery and Exchequer support will be invested in increasing the number of people participating in grassroots sports and contains a number of initiatives to achieve that aim.

In a recent interview with the Guardian, however, Hugh Robertson - the minister for sport and the Olympics - said Sport England's measurement system would be overhauled.

Robertson told the newspaper: "The Active People Survey will stay but it will measure against a more realistic target and in a different way."

Sport England said the changes to its measurement system, which are under discussion with the government, will now need to accommodate 14- and 15-year-olds, as well as over-16s.

A spokesperson said there had already been new elements brought in, like face-to-face interviews; a mobile phone aspect; and an increase in 16-to-25-year-olds involved with the research.

"Active People is a robust survey that provides the official statistics for measuring sports participation across the country and in a huge range of sports," the spokesperson said.

"We are currently reviewing how we will measure participation under our new strategy, both to capture the number of 14- and 15-year-olds taking part and to ensure that we continue to reflect participation by all sections of society."
