Selby Leisure Centre plans revealed following fire
New plans have been unveiled for a replacement leisure centre in Selby, Yorkshire after the previous one was destroyed in a fire last year.
The old leisure centre covered an area of around 3,069sq metres (33,000sq feet) while the new plans intend to have a footprint of 1,851sq metres (19,900sq feet) - nearly half that of the previous building.
The fire started in the steam and sauna area, destroying the building less than two years after it underwent a £1.1m (US$1.7m, €1.3m) refurbishment.
Councillors decided to demolish the burnt wreckage of the building and start again, building a larger gym, six-lane swimming pool and an outdoor all-weather sports pitch.
The plans, which will reportedly cost around £9m (US$13.6m, €10.5m) will resemble "a simple, crisp box", with large windows around the building, including a seven-metre-high window looking into the pool.
The council have asked Sport England to contribute £2m (US$3m, €2.33m) towards the project, which has no confirmed start date for construction, but it expected to take around two years to complete.
