Ireland to host 300 events during European Week of Sport
More than 300 sporting events will be held across Ireland from 10 September as part of the nation’s participation in this year’s European Week of Sport.
Events include the 100km Great Dublin Bike Ride, Sport Against Racism Soccer Fest, National Fitness Day and Cycle to Work Day.
Activities are being coordinated by Sport Ireland – the grassroots participation funding partner of the government.
The number of activities reflects Ireland’s growing focus on getting more people physically active. The Irish government recently published a comprehensive 10-year strategy for sport, while setting aside a €27m (£21.1m, US$30.1m) pot in sports grants.
“One of the key objectives of Sport Ireland is increasing participation in sport and physical activity, and with almost 1.7m Irish adults currently participating in sport regularly we are determined to get as many people active as possible,” said Kieran Mulvey, chair of Sport Ireland. “Initiatives such as this are a great way of encouraging people to get out and get active.”
John Treacy, Sport Ireland chief executive, added: “I would like to acknowledge the large number of sport, health and education agencies in Ireland including Healthy Ireland, national governing bodies of sport, local sports partnerships, Outdoor Education Ireland, Parkrun and Ireland Active for their support and contribution.”
