Sports clubs double their money

02 Feb 2004

The Sports Council for Wales’ (SCW) Sportsmatch Cymru scheme has revealed that the Welsh Women’s Rugby Union (WWRU) will receive £21,800 from the PHS group and £21,000 from Sportsmatch Cymru.

The Welsh Schools Football Association (WSFA) will also receive a £30,000 cash injection.

So far, the SCW Sportsmatch Cymru scheme has invested over £3m into grassroots sports projects across Wales by encouraging businesses to invest in sport via offering the ‘£ for £’ funding incentive. The scheme is funded by the Welsh Assembly Government and managed by the SCW.

The SCW also announced that its pound for pound scheme has meant that female rugby organisation, Clwb Rygbi Merched Dolgellau, has clinched a £1,700 deal, with half of the money coming from Fronoleu Country Hotel and the rest topped up by the Sportsmatch scheme.

The money will be used to purchase playing kit and to fund an education programme for the club’s developing coaches.

Meanwhile, the WSFA £30,000 cash injection comprises a £15,000 cash deal with HSBC that will also be matched pound for pound by the Sportsmatch scheme to enable the WSFA to develop its inter-school competitions with a specific emphasis on encouraging more female teams.

Chair of Sportsmatch Cymru, Lynn Davies, said: “Grassroots sports sponsorship is an excellent tool to nurture good will amongst the local community and it is inspirational to witness businesses embracing this philosophy.” Details: www.sports-council-wales.co.uk
