Sports development legacy identified for Glasgow

By Pete Hayman    19 Sep 2008

Glasgow City Council (GCC) has outlined its priorities and initial actions needed to develop a sports development legacy from the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

The council plans to increase participation in coaching, clubs and volunteering through developing the city's sporting infrastructure. Initial projects for the legacy programme will focus on a range of sports, including athletics, badminton and swimming, and a budget of £250,000 has been set aside by GCC for the first year of the strategy.

Events held before the end of 2009, which feature the first sports identified under the strategy, will also be given more opportunities to work with high performance coaches and athletes. Some of the events expected to benefit include the Resolution Asset Management Women's 10k, the Indoor Athletics Grand Prix and the Scottish Badminton Open. Archie Graham, the council's executive member for Commonwealth Games delivery, said: "The 2014 Commonwealth Games presents the city and country with a unique opportunity to transform health and sporting participation and performance at every level up to and beyond the summer of 2014.

"The first step is increasing participation and access to coaching, and long-term sports development too, will help to deliver a lasting sporting legacy."
