Berwick Rangers FC plans new stadium in England

By Jessica Tasman-Jones    19 Feb 2013

Scottish Football League team Berwick Rangers FC has commissioned a feasibility study into building a new stadium, which would see them move from their existing facility in Northumberland, by the English-Scottish border.

The club is said to be negotiating the possible purchase of land nearby, also in Tweedmouth, which architecture and design firm Frank Whittle Partnership (FWP) has been commissioned to complete a stadium feasibility study for.

The Rangers' current stadium, Shielfield Park, has a capacity of just over 4,000 and is owned by the Northumberland County Council.

Club chairman Brian Porteous said: "Shieldfield is an old stadium and we realise it is not ideally suited to our needs.

"It is not going to be around for ever and one day will probably need a lot of money spent on it."

Senior architect at FWP Richard McGonigal said: "As with all the sporting projects of this kind we have been involved in, we will look to create a masterplan that will not only deliver a modern stadium for spectators and players alike, but will be a real asset to the local community.

"We believe it is important for clubs that football grounds of this type are not just used once a fortnight on match day, but are able to generate revenue and be of use on all days of the week."

FWP has offices in London, Manchester and London, and has previously carried out a similar study for Carlisle United, upgraded stands at Peterborough United and Oldham Athletic, and developed Fleetwood Town's Highbury ground.
