Spotify launches curated running playlists to match pace and preference

Spotify has sought to tackle the often-tricky task of finding a decent playlist that will help runners pick up the pace through the launch of Spotify Running.

The new streaming service is accessible to both paid and free subscribers through the Spotify app. It offers runners an array of different playlists tailored to their genre preferences and – here’s the clever bit – the pace at which they’re running to ensure the beat matches their feet.

On choosing a genre, a woman’s voice tells users to “Start running to detect tempo.” As the runner starts to move, Spotify pinpoints their pace using a smartphone’s accelerometer and gyroscope to calculate a suitable selection of on-tempo songs.

In addition to playlists based on a user’s genre preference and listening history, there are also curated playlists from some of the world’s foremost DJs and composers, as well as original tracks created for Spotify Running.

Spotify has announced a series of upcoming collaborations with Nike to bring music to more runners, including the integration of Spotify Running into the Nike+ workout app. Their are also plans to tie-up the popular RunKeeper app with Spotify Running later this year.

“We’re bringing a deeper, richer, more immersive Spotify experience,” said Spotify founder and CEO Daniel Ek.

“We want Spotify to help soundtrack your life by offering an even wider world of entertainment with an awesome mix of the best music, podcasts and video delivered to you throughout your day. And we’re just getting started.”
