Liverpool City Council is expected to approve a proposal for the restoration and improvement of the city’s 45-hectare, Grade II-listed Stanley Park.

Granting of planning permission to Liverpool FC in April 2006 for the construction of a new 60,000-seat stadium on the eastern side of the park was made conditional upon the company restoring the historic core and landscape of the parkland, which was designed by Edward Hemp in 1867.

Heritage buildings to be repaired and put back into public use include the Gladstone Conservatory, Bandstand, Lakeside Gazebo, Anfield Lodge, five pavilions and screen wall on the park’s southern boundary, one sandstone and four cast iron bridges, cast iron shelters and boundary walls, as well as all the railings and gates.

In addition, Friends of Stanley Park are requesting that the timber-framed Tudor-style Boathouse Plinth dating back to the 1880s should not only be restored to its former glory, but also developed for educational and recreational use by visitors to the lake.

A comprehensive CCTV system covering the entire park will also be introduced to discourage anti-social behaviour.
