Odeon signs up Sony for digital roll out
Odeon & UCI Cinemas Group (Odeon) has agreed a deal with Sony Pictures Releasing International (SPRI) to supply its digital roll out strategy.
The agreement will see Sony provide its motion picture content in digital form to all Odeon/UCI theatre locations that are deployed with DCI-compliant digital projection systems.
SPRI will support the initiative to achieve 100 per cent digital rollout by contributing towards digital conversion fees.
The deal covers all seven territories in which Odeon operates - including the UK, Ireland, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Italy and Austria.
Long-term digital deployment deals have now been inked with all six major Hollywood studios and various independent distributors to support the digital conversion in the UK.
With more than 1,800 total screens, Odeon is Europe's biggest cinema chain.
The group currently operates 491 digital screens across all of its territories, including 280 in the UK, an overall increase of 145 per cent in the past three months.
Mark Zucker, president of SPRI, said: "Odeon's move into digital coincides with our strategy to enhance movie-goers' theatrical experience.
"Odeon will be offering audiences an opportunity to view Sony's future motion pictures in theatres containing digital cinema projectors."
