The National Gallery of Australia (NGA) in Canberra, ACT, has been gifted AUS$7m (£4m) by Melbourne-based philanthropists Pauline and John Gandel.

The move comes ahead of the anticipated completion in spring next year of the first stage of a redevelopment programme at the NGA which will include the opening of 11 new indigenous art galleries and a function hall. In recognition of their donation, the new hall will be known as the Gandel Hall and used as a venue for openings and special events, as well as public programmes and school and education activities.

John Gandel said: "The National Gallery of Australia has an essential role in developing the national art collection for future generations of Australians. Pauline and I hope that our support will inspire others to follow in our footsteps." The NGA's director, Ron Radford said: "This is an historic time for the National Gallery and the support from Pauline and John Gandel will help us to continue to develop the national art collection and to make the gallery experience more accessible and exciting," he said.
