Onsen cabins, hammams and salt water pools added as Italian spa doubles in size
Spa consultancy Be a Business Spa (bbspa) has doubled the size of the Varsanna Spa at the Palazzo di Varignana Resort & Spa near Bologna, Italy, adding in a new 1,000sq m (10,764sq ft) panoramic area and a 500sq m (5,382sq ft) Spa Fusion area dedicated to global spa rituals.
The panoramic area adds two pools to the spas existing three, including a relaxing pool and a salt water pool, as well as a relaxation area, a panoramic solarium and a lounge bar, while the Spa Fusion area incorporates both Japanese and Middle Eastern spa rituals in dedicated areas for each.
The Middle Eastern section features a scrub and soft steam area, a cold pool with hot rain and cold mist, a hot steam area, two hammams, and a Spastream Cabin for water massage and scrubs. The area uses traditional Tadelakt, a waterproof lime plaster, which is rammed, polished, and treated with soap to make it waterproof and water-repellant.
The Japanese area includes onsen cabins for two and four people with Ofuro wooden bathtubs from Japan and walls lined in cedar, as well as a Japanese tea room.
“The Spa Fusion area is a very sophisticated area, only dedicated to rituals for a small number of users,” Regis Boudon-Doris, CEO of bbspa, told Spa Opportunities.
The spa already had heat and steam areas, five treatment rooms, three spa suites, and three swimming pools. Boudon-Doris worked with Italian interior designers Erre Design on the project, which is set to open next month.
