Five clubs have been warned by the Rugby Football League (RFL) that they face being thrown out of the Super League in 2012 if they fail to fulfil a commitment to provide new or improved facilities.

The five clubs, which were among 14 to receive a three-year Super League licence last year, have been told by the RFL that stadium plans will need to be sufficiently advanced by 2011 in order to satisfy the criteria for Super League entry between 2012 and 2015. St Helens and Celtic Crusaders have both committed to building new stadiums in order to renew their Super League licences, while Wakefield Trinity Wildcats, Castleford Tigers and Salford City Reds also plan to provide new facilities.

Gary Tasker, the RFL's director of development, said: "Five clubs put forward their intention to build new stadiums, with a number creating a lot of publicity. Some clubs are at a more advanced stage of the planning process than others. "We felt that, a year on from awarding the licences, it was appropriate to remind all the clubs concerned of their commitment to upgrade their current facility or move to a new stadium and the potential implications any failure to do so may have on their next licence application."

The RFL also confirmed that at least one Championship club will receive a Super League licence from 2012 depending on whether strict criteria can be met.
