Tate Modern to reach-out to under 18s
In celebration of Tate Modern’s fifth anniversary, entry to the major summer exhibition, Frida Kahlo (9 June – 9 October), will be free to anyone aged 18 and under, including school groups, in the museum’s latest bid to attract new, younger audiences.
Tate director, Nicholas Serota, said that although the Tate galleries already attract some seven million visitors a year, “the aim now is to extend Tate’s reach to the next generation of visitors.”
The campaign to attract more young people has already had some success – in 2004, 60 per cent of all visitors were under 35 years old. School trips brought nearly 90,000 children to Tate Modern, with more than 11,600 attending special workshops.
This year, Tate Members is to launch its first-ever fundraising drive to raise £100,000 towards targeting under fives, excluded children and their carers and community advocates from local groups. Details: www.tate.org.uk/modern
