Visitor centre planned for St Kilda

By Luke Tuchscherer    26 Apr 2009

A new visitor centre is reportedly being planned for the protected islands of St Kilda in the Outer Hebrides.

According to the BBC, Western Isles Council - or Comhairle nan Eilean Siar - is considering building the centre on the archipelago, but it won't be built on Hirta, St Kilda's main island, due to difficulty reaching it.

The council will conduct a feasibility study to ascertain where a centre could be sited, and what tourism benefits it could bring.

The UNESCO World Heritage Site is located 41 miles off the most westerly of North Scotland's Outer Hebridean islands, and is cared for by the National Trust for Scotland in conjunction with Scottish National Heritage and the Ministry of Defence.
