Councillors meet to resolve reef problems
A cross-party working group of councillors has met for the first time in a bid to come up with solutions to problems affecting the Boscombe Surf Reef off the Dorset coast.
The four-member Surf Reef Task and Finish Group was established by Bournemouth Borough Council (BBC) after a study criticised the facility for failing to create waves that were too short and infrequent. Draft proposals from the developer behind the reef's construction, New Zealand-based ASR, were welcomed by the task group, which aims to find cost-effective methods of achieving required performance values.
Deconstructing the reef has already been ruled out as an option, with the group set to continue discussions over the coming weeks with ASR and a range of parties to come up with solutions. Recommendations are due to be put to BBC's economy and tourism scrutiny panel before being presented to the cabinet in October.
