Spurs launches Olympic Stadium legal bid

By Pete Hayman    14 Apr 2011
THFC is challenging Newham's GBP40m loan to support WHUFC's bid

Tottenham Hotspur Football Club (THFC) has launched legal proceedings over West Ham United Football Club's (WHUFC) successful bid for the Olympic Stadium.

The Premier League club revealed it was seeking permission from the High Court to pursue a claim against the London Borough of Newham, which supported WHUFC's bid. THFC is calling for a judicial review of Newham Council's decision to provide a £40m loan towards the cost of converting the Olympic Stadium after the 2012 Games.

A THFC spokesperson said: "The club wrote to Newham asking it to explain its reasons and justification for its decision, but Newham has declined to respond to this request for information. "Due to the time limits which apply to claims for judicial review, the club has had no alternative but to issue these proceedings in order to protect its position."

Meanwhile, Leyton Orient Football Club (LOFC) has confirmed that it had also launched judicial review proceedings against the London Borough of Newham. Mishcon de Reya, the npower League One club's lawyers, have commenced proceedings with regards to the £40m loan provided by the council.

A LOFC spokesperson said: "Further to this, the club's lawyers are in correspondence with the founder members of the Olympic Park Legacy Company, including the government and the Mayor, with a view to a further judicial review." Image: ODA
