New attraction for Empire State Building

By Pete Hayman    20 Jul 2011
The attraction explores the history and construction of the landmark

A new permanent visitor experience has been launched on the 80th floor of the Empire State Building in New York, US, to explore the history and construction of the iconic landmark.

Carol Willis of New York's Skyscraper Museum is curating the new installation, which will look at three main themes - speed, scale and steel - in relation to the story of the building. Artefacts include reproductions of photographs and mementos of more than 3,400 workers who worked on the project, along with documents and architectural sketches.

Content has been provided by the Skyscraper Museum's archives and also sees windows in the attraction showing views from the building as it would have appeared in 1931. Empire State Building Company's Anthony E Malkin said: "The new 80th floor exhibit's homage to the pioneering work of the architects, builders, and labourers of the day adds to our US$2m (£1.2m), multi-media exhibit about the groundbreaking work on energy efficiency performed at the building and offers educational value for every visitor."
