IWM London submits £35m revamp plans
Imperial War Museums (IWM) has submitted a listed building and planning application to Southwark Council for the transformation of its flagship branch in Lambeth, south London.
The proposals focus on the first phase of a longer term masterplan for IWM London, which has been drawn up in partnership with renowned UK-based architects, Foster + Partners.
Lend Lease Construction has been confirmed as the construction management contractor on the scheme, which also involves London-based exhibition designer Casson Mann.
The plans will see new, larger First World Galleries created in order to enable IWM London to display more of its collection, while its central hall is set to be completely overhauled.
New central hall terrace displays for improved interpretation of the museum's larger objects also forms part of the project, along with additional gallery space at the top of the attraction.
Work is to be completed in 2014 in order to commemorate the Centenary of the outbreak of the First World War. IWM London will shut for six months from January 2013.
IWM director-general Diane Lees said: "IWM was founded during the First World War as a lasting memorial to all those who played their part in the conflict.
"Our new galleries will allow us to continue this work in the twenty-first century, helping to keep the history and personal recollections of the war alive for future generations."
