Plans for £8.5m sports complex in Derbyshire
Plans are underway for a new multi-million pound sports complex that would replace Queen's Park Sports Centre in Chesterfield, Derbyshire.
A proposal for the £8.5m project, which would open in Spring 2015, is set to go before the Chesterfield Borough Council.
Plans for the centre include a 25m swimming pool with learner pool, a fitness suite, a spinning studio, dance studio and a sports hall.
The project is being developed in partnership with Chesterfield College, who would invest £2.5 million in the building so that students can make use of the facilities during term time.
Chesterfield College expressed an interest in investing in the Queen's Park Leisure Centre site after agreeing to sell its Clowne campus to Bolsover District Council.
Councillor Amanda Serjeant, Chesterfield Borough Council's, said that it would cost at least £3m over the next 25 years to keep the existing building open because of poor energy efficiency.
"The existing centre is showing its age and lacks the facilities of modern leisure centres. We have the opportunity to work in partnership with Chesterfield College to transform this and leave a new leisure centre that meets the demands and expectations of the local community, is cheaper to run and provides an impressive post Olympics leisure legacy for the town." said Serjeant.
