Wearable tech offers a bird's eye view at Kansas zoo
Kansas City Zoo has used Google Glass to launch a video detailing the life of a penguin keeper.
The zoo worked with Engage Mobile Solutions to create the film, which involved outfitting two keepers with wearable mobile technology to record first-hand experiences of interactions with the Southern Rockhopper, King and Gentoo penguins.
The video has been uploaded to Youtube, where zoo fans can view the footage in HD, while it has also played a prominent role in the facility's social media campaigns.
“We are always looking for ways to provide zoo fans more interaction with the animals. Working with Engage Mobile has allowed us to bring the experience of direct interaction with the penguins to animal lovers around the world,” said Randy Wisthoff, executive director and CEO of Kansas City Zoo.
The footage uncovers what is involved in preparing the penguins’ food as well as the trials and tribulations of feeding time itself. It also shows how the flightless birds interact with zoo visitors.
The zoo’s US$15m (€10.8m, £8.87m) Helzberg Penguin Plaza opened in October 2013.
