Artist Christo plans 3km-long shimmering yellow floating pier around Lake Iseo, Italy
World renowned artist Christo is creating a temporary 3km (1.8mi) floating pier which visitors can walk over onto the island of San Paolo in Italy's Lake Iseo.
In his biggest project since Christo and late wife Jeanne-Claude created The Gates in 2005, The Floating Piers will be constructed of 200,000 high-density polyethylene cubes covered in 70,000sq m (7,534,737sq ft) of shimmering yellow fabric.
Visitors will be able to experience this work of art by walking on it from Sulzano to Monte Isola and over to the island of San Paolo, which Lake Iseo encircles. The mountains surrounding the lake will offer a bird’s-eye view of The Floating Piers.
The attraction will last for 16 days in June 2016 and will measure 16m (52ft) wide and approximately 50cm (19ins) high, with sloping sides. The fabric will continue along 1.5km of pedestrian streets in Sulzano and Peschiera Maraglio.
Christo and his team chose Lake Iseo as the project site after scouting the lakes of northern Italy in summer 2014 and finding it the most inspiring. Lake Iseo is located 100km (62mi) east of Milan and 200km west of Venice.
After the 16-day exhibition, all components will be removed and industrially recycled.
