A museum celebrating the Olympic legacy of Brazil will come up in Rio de Janeiro, to open in time for next year’s 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

To be built on the Barra da Tijuca, just behind the location of the Athletes' Village, the development will tell the story of the Rio 2016 Games and the wider history of Brazil at the Olympics, Paralympics and Winter Olympics as part of the country’s legacy plans.

An agreement for the plans, which form part of AECOM’s masterplan for the Olympic Park, was signed by the Brazilian Olympic Committee COB earlier this month. Brazil made its Olympic debut at the 1920 Games in Antwerp and has competed at every Games since, except for the 1928 event in Amsterdam. The South American nation has also sent teams to every Winter Olympic Games since Albertville in 1992.

“To be able to build an Olympic Museum in the city of Rio de Janeiro is a great joy,” said Rio de Janeiro state governor Luiz Fernando Pezão. “I am certain that this will become one of the main tourist attractions in the city.”
