Hard Rock unveils vision for hotel at Berlin's Checkpoint Charlie

Hard Rock International has revealed its plans to build a 372-room music-themed hotel in Berlin adjacent to Checkpoint Charlie and displaying a section of the Berlin Wall.

According to project partner the Trockland Development Group, the hotel will form part of a 2.5 acre multi-use project commemorating the history and symbolism of the checkpoint; which was the best known crossing point between East and West Berlin during the Cold War.

“We have a unique opportunity to share Berlin's history at this location – in a city that has been transformed from the climate of distrust in the period of division into a symbol of freedom and unity,” said Trockland founder Heskel Nathaniel. “Our task is to incorporate this spirit into the concept of the complex and its architecture.

“We are aware of the requirement to implement the entire project with the utmost sensitivity, diligence and integrity.”

Hard Rock – which operates 204 hotels, cafes and casinos worldwide – has promised a hotel reflective of Berlin’s musical past when it opens on 2020.

“With its unparalleled creative legacy, Berlin has influenced some of the greatest music ever recorded and inspired rock legends from David Bowie and the Ramones to U2 and Scorpions,” said the company in a statement.

“It is the city's rock revolution and punk scenes that served as a catalyst in helping Berlin open up to the world and solidify its place as a global centre for culture and the arts. The property's design will pay tribute to the music and events that shaped its unique location.”

Hard Rock owns a music memorabilia collection of over 80,000 items and some of these will be displayed at the hotel, including a Hammond C3 organ used by Pink Floyd to record their album The Wall.

The centrepiece of the collection will be a section of the Berlin Wall inscribed with “thoughts and mottos” of musicians, merging the site’s unique musical and political pasts.

The architects behind the project have yet to be revealed, but Trockland said the hotel will feature a Hard Rock Cafe, a Body Rock gym, a Rock Spa featuring the brand's Rhythm & Motion spa menu, a Rock Shop selling the brand’s merchandise, and a 970sq m (8,280sq ft) ballroom.

A swimming pool and lounge will be located on the rooftop, with views overlooking Checkpoint Charlie and the Berlin skyline.
