Paris 2024 chair rules out bid for 2028 Olympic Games
One of the chairs overseeing Paris’ 2024 Olympic bid has ruled out hosting the 2028 Games, claiming it was “now or never”.
Earlier this month, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) indicated that it could award both the 2024 and 2028 Games this year, opening up the possibility of the two remaining 2024 bidders – Paris and Los Angeles – being awarded one event each.
However, Paris 2024 co-chair Tony Estanguet poured cold water on the prospect of the French capital hosting four years later.
“There won’t be any Games in Paris 2028,” he said. “It was very clear with our partners and with our leaders that we only bid for 2024. Our project is not possible for 2028.”
Paris had previously bid for the 1992, 2008 and 2012 Games, and Estanguet – a three-time Olympic canoe slalom champion – said: “This is the last chance. So, it’s now or never for Paris.”
Budapest, Hamburg and Rome, which had all been vying to host the 2024 Games at some point, all pulled out of the process leaving the final two.
