Kampung Admiralty, a community-centred mixed-use development in Singapore, has won the World Architecture Festival Building of the Year 2018.

Designed by WOHA Architects, the 11-storey structure, which is reportedly the first integrated facility in Singapore to provide housing for retirees, features a biophilic rainforest and includes residences, restaurants, and medical centres.

Describing the Admiralty as an "elevated village green", the firm said: "The close proximity to healthcare, social, commercial, and other amenities support inter-generational bonding and promote active ageing in place."

The announcement for the prize was made on the last day of World Architecture Festival (WAF), at a gala dinner which took place at the Beurs Van Berlage in Amsterdam.

Speaking at the ceremony, Paul Finch, Programme Director of WAF commented: "The judges admired the project for the way in which it dealt with the universal condition of longevity and health treatments, social housing provision, and commercial space, which enabled substantial public realm benefits.

"The jury felt this was a project with potential lessons for cities and countries around the world."
