Libeskind chosen for World Trade Centre

28 Feb 2003

A design by Berlin-based architect Daniel Libeskind has been selected from over four hundred submissions for the World Trade Center site in New York.

Libeskind, who designed the Imperial War Museum North and the Jewish Museum in Berlin, beat Think, a consortium of New-York based architects including Rafael Vinoly and Frederick Schwartz, to be selected for the scheme.

The plan includes a 1,776ft tower, which will be the world's tallest, and incorporates an interpretive museum, cultural facilities, a performing arts centre and office and retail space.

Construction is not due to begin for more than a year.
