Council reveals York stadium site options

By Pete Hayman    29 Jun 2010

Four potential locations for the development of a new community stadium in York are set to go before the local council next month for consideration.

A detailed business case has been conducted by the City of York Council (CYC) to explore plans for the venue, which will provide a home for York City Football Club (YCFC) and York City Knights rugby league team. The council's executive will be asked to consider the report when it meets on 6 July, with potential sites including YCFC's Bootham Crescent ground and Hull Road/Heslington East University campus.

Mile Crux/North of Nestle and Monks Cross are the two other options for the proposed stadium, which will also be used by amateur organisations and members of the community. Initial plans include a 6,000-seat stadium with the possibility of including 3G pitches, flexible office space and health and fitness facilities, while a dedicated athletics facility will also be provided at a different site.

A CYC spokesperson said: "Even taking into account funding from partners and the council, there is a considerable budget gap for each of the site options. "It's anticipated that the best way this could be met would be via 'enabling development' - financial contributions from developers building on other sites in the city - to facilitate the community stadium scheme."
