London's last remaining 1948 Olympic finals venue has been given a new lease of life after a new-look track at Herne Hill Velodrome was unveiled by sport minister Hugh Robertson.

British Cycling part-funded the £500,000 refurbishment in conjunction with a bequest from Leonard Lyes, a life-long track cycling supporter who passed away in 2009. Work was undertaken following an agreement between the national governing body and the owner of the Herne Hill Velodrome site, The Dulwich Estate.

Robertson said: "It is fitting that the year before London 2012, we are able to celebrate the refurbishment of the track at one of the key venues from the 1948 Games. "It is vital that people are provided with the facilities and opportunities to ride their bikes, be they young people starting out, serious racers, or others simply cycling to keep fit."
