Spurs commits to stadium in Tottenham

By Pete Hayman    03 Feb 2012

A new stadium will be built as part of the wider regeneration of Tottenham, North London, following a pledge by Tottenham Hotspur Football Club (THFC) and Haringey Council.

The club, which had been eyeing a move to the Olympic Stadium, recently delisted from the London Stock Exchange to help raise funding for its Northumberland Development Project.

THFC and Haringey Council will now work together to bring about the regeneration of the area, which will be anchored by a 56,250-seat stadium designed by the KSS Group.

Subject to approval, the council plans to invest £9m in new and upgraded public spaces and heritage work. London mayor Boris Johnson has also pledged £18m towards the scheme.

THFC chair Daniel Levy said: "We have long said we could only invest in the area if we could see our commitment supported by others and that there was a real need to maximise the regeneration benefits and lift the wider area.

"We therefore see this as a commitment from the public sector to the Tottenham area and one which strengthens our ability to deliver a new stadium scheme."

Haringey Council leader Clarie Kober added: "We know that together we can bring new employment opportunities to Tottenham, significantly improve the area and attract investment for a successful and sustainable future."
