English Heritage announces chief executive to lead Historic England

By Alice Davis    18 Feb 2015
Duncan Wilson will become Historic England’s first chief executive in May

English Heritage has announced Duncan Wilson will be made the first chief executive of Historic England.

Wilson’s experience includes stints at Somerset House Trust, the Old Royal Naval College and Alexandra Palace, London.

“I am delighted to be given the extraordinary opportunity of leading Historic England at such a critical time for our national heritage,” Wilson said. “England’s heritage is one of our greatest national assets and as its guardian Historic England must make sure that it is not only passed on to future generations in the best possible state, but also that we make best use of it, and that more and more people share our passion for it.”

From April, English Heritage officially splits into two organisations, a charity and a newly-named body, Historic England. The English Heritage charity will manage the National Heritage Collection of more than 400 historic sites, including Stonehenge and the site of the 1066 Battle of Hastings.

Kate Mavor was recently announced as the charity arm’s first chief executive.

The changes at English Heritage were recently-approved by the UK government. In a letter written by Sir Laurie Magnus, chair of English Heritage, the transformation is explained thus:

“A new charity, retaining the name English Heritage, will run the National Heritage Collection of historic properties. A newly-named non-departmental public body, Historic England, will be dedicated to offering expert advice, championing the wider historic environment and providing support for stakeholders in the heritage sector. The changes will come into effect on 1 April 2015.”
