Cult 90s TV show The Crystal Maze set to become London attraction

Shouts of “Get the Crystal!” might soon be ringing through the streets of London. Rumours are circulating that a 1990s game show – featuring a labyrinth, a huge dome, an eccentric bald host and his “mumsy” – is going to be brought back in the form of an immersive attraction experience.

British TV show The Crystal Maze, which ran from 1990 to 1995, developed a huge cult following thanks to its quirky concept and wide variety of gripping challenges.

The idea might have come off the back of an article in the Guardian in February . In a story about the TV show’s 25th anniversary, it called for a reboot of the concept as an immersive escape game, a “Crystal Maze 2.0”.

“Live-action ‘escape games’ where participants have to solve a series of cryptic clues to get out of a locked room … are currently all the rage in the UK and beyond,” it said. “It feels like there’s still a public appetite for this kind of immersive experience.”

A tweet posted on Twitter on 9 June by @CrystalMazeHQ implied this was the case:

And on Instagram, thecrystalmaze account posted a picture of the dome, with the description: “Artists [sic] impression of things to come! #thecrystalmaze #immersive #live #livegame #london”.

In The Crystal Maze, a team of six friends or colleagues, clad in jumpsuits, followed host Richard O’Brien around a maze of four zones: Aztec, Medieval, Industrial and Futuristic. Players had to complete short challenges in the zones’ different rooms. If they won the challenge and escaped the room they won a crystal; and if they lost, they remained locked inside the room.

Crystals won were equal to time spent inside a huge “crystal dome”. Fans blew metallic tokens around the dome, and the team members had to retrieve as many as they could. Banking enough tokens – which was a rarity – meant the team would win a prize.
