The Global Wellness Institute’s (GWI) Wellness Architecture and Design Initiative (WADI) has released an in-depth white paper exploring the principles, strategies and economic, physiological and environmental benefits of incorporating wellness into the built environment.

Titled Pathways to Wellness Architecture and Design, the comprehensive 174-page publication aims to guide investors, developers, architects and stakeholders in adopting holistic, evidence-based design practices that positively impact individuals, communities and the planet.

“Planning, designing and building to enhance our immune systems, mental health and community wellbeing are essential for future generations and the planet,” said Lahra Tatriele, chair of the WADI.

“This white paper presents a new paradigm, emphasising that wellness architecture and design is not merely a movement but a shift in attitudes, behaviours and practices, shaping our cultural identity."

She added: “The potential of wellness architecture to transform the built environment is immense. By prioritising health and wellbeing, these designs not only enhance individual and community quality of life but also reap substantial economic returns.

“Embracing this contemporary, holistic approach will pave the way for a future where built environments actively contribute to the flourishing of individuals, communities and the planet.”

Supported by global case studies and evidence, the publication is the result of a collaborative two-year effort by an interdisciplinary team of architects, designers and developers.

The following GWI WADI members contributed to the paper:

• Valentina Cereda, founder of Energy & Space and integrative architect.• Anthony DiGuiseppe, CEO and founding principal of DiGuiseppe Architect.

• Sherry Fong, operations director for senior living, residential care homes and wellness, wellness and horticultor strategist.• Kailas Moorthy, director and practice head at DP Architects (London).

• Phillip Tabb, professor emeritus of architecture at Texas A&M University and the Liz and Nelson Mitchell professor of residential design.• Lahra Tatriele, WADI chair, co-founder & chief wellness strategist, Alchemy Concepts and co-founder, Fivelements.
