Thames to host major new art exhibition

By Pete Hayman    29 Oct 2010
Julius Popp's bit.fall will form part of DRIFT 10

A section of London's River Thames is to play host to a number of contemporary art works between 2 November and 8 January as part of the DRIFT 10 event.

The bi-annual art exhibition first took place in 2008 and will see installations placed on the water in both Central London and in the Docklands as part of the event. Illuminate Productions is behind the DRIFT 10 exhibition, which will incorporate bit.fall - waterfalls placed at the Bankside riverside walkway near Tate Modern and at Canary Wharf.

Meanwhile, origami paper boats - assembled with help from the public - will take to the water at two locations. Other installations include a wind-powered fog light at the Bankside pier. Caroline Jones, the DRIFT curator and co-founder of Illuminate Productions, said: "The art works are all in the public domain so people will come across them naturally. Making contemporary art freely available to the public is at the core of what we do.

"We are also very pleased to be building on the success of DRIFT08, the first time contemporary artworks were placed directly in the Thames. The show was a major success, capturing the imagination of people across London, the UK, and internationally." Artists participating include James Capper; Julius Popp - who is behind bit.fall; Frank Bölter; Christian Grou and Tapio Snellman.
