The Eden Project backs London 2012
As part of 2012 Day – 20 December – London 2012’s logo was projected onto the futuristic biomes of the Eden Project in support of the Olympic bid.
As one of Cornwall’s most popular attractions, the Eden Project’s success provides a blueprint for London 2012’s plans for the regeneration of east London, said Eden’s marketing director, Dave Meneer.
“Building Eden showed that you can do anything if you have the vision, the energy and the commitment,” he said.
“People committed to innovation have created in the Eden Project an organisation which is dedicated to a sustainable future and to education.
“This is entirely complimentary to the plans and aspirations for the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games and we wanted to show the world that we support the bid.”
London 2012 chair Sebastian Coe was delighted with the Eden Project’s illumination and urged “everyone to get on board and back the bid, which will bring huge benefits to the whole of the UK.”
Events were held all over the UK to celebrate 2012 Day.
In Sheffield, Olympic rower Debbie Flood presented a grant to fund transport, training and equipment to a group of 20 potential competitors.
Birmingham’s Aston Villa Football Club hosted an event in Villa Park, which would host football matches in 2012.
Canoeing and kayaking events are planned to take place in Broxbourne, Hertfordshire, which held a canoeing demonstration by Athens silver medallist Campbell Walsh on 2012 Day.
