The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has elected former Olympic fencing champion and IOC vice-president Thomas Bach as its new president.

Bach, a 59-year-old German who became an IOC member in 1991 ahead of joining its executive board in 1996, will take over the role from the retiring Jacques Rogge.

He won the tightly contested election at the 125th IOC general meeting in Buenos Aires, Argentina today (10 September). Bach was elected ahead of other nominees Ng Ser Miang, a fellow IOC vice president; Puerto Rican banker Richard Carrion; Ukrainian pole vault legend Sergei Bubka; International Boxing Association president Ching-Kuo Wu; and Swiss lawyer Denis Oswald.
