Treasury reveals World Cup bid guarantees
HM Treasury has published details of the guarantees which the government made to FIFA as part of England's failed bid to host the 2018 World Cup.
It has been believed that the cost of hosting the tournament would have been around £250m, with the event contributing up to £3.2bn to the UK economy. Among the guarantees disclosed following a freedom of information request was a promise of free visas for hospitality customers and ticket holders attending the event.
The government said that it would provide up to £5m in order to fund the guarantee, with the Football Association meeting the remaining costs. Other guarantees made to FIFA included tax exemption and the relaxation of labour laws in accordance with requirements issued by football's world governing body.
