'Two options' for Stadium Southland project
Southland Indoor Leisure Centre Charitable Trust (SILCCT) has unveiled two options for a project to redevelop Stadium Southland in Invercargill, New Zealand.
The proposals have been named Zero and Hero, with Zero comprising a NZ$22.6m (£11m, EUR12.4m, US$18.1m) scheme featuring additional seating to cater for up to 4,000. Zero will also see the roof above the seven courts raised by 4m (13.1ft) and built to existing earthquake and snow-loading standards, although the foyer area would be largely unaltered.
Meanwhile, the Hero option would cost NZ$28.7m (£14m, EUR15.8m, US$23m) and will feature a new roof over the entire venue and an additional 650sq m (6,997sq ft) of space. Additional facilities will include a three-level entrance, a Hall of Fame and a Clip and Climb rock wall, with both options now to go before the local community as part of a consultation.
SILCCT chair Action Smith said: "We need the community to stand up because our community funders need assistance with this and to hear their views - do they want the Zero or the Hero?" Smith added that the Hero option would provide a 'safe haven' for the city in the event of a natural disaster, saying: "We owe it to the people of Invercargill to have one place that meets civil defence requirements as a safe haven for up to 5,000 people."
