UK Sport announces first round of funding

26 Jul 2006

UK Sport has announced that the majority of Olympic sports are on course to receive full funding for the next quarter.

Of the 27 sports receiving new or additional funding as part of the long-term preparations for the London 2012 Olympics, 20 have completed the first stage of UK Sport's funding triggers requirements, meaning that they will receive the full allocation of their ringfenced funding.

As part of the agreement for increasing funding, secured after the 2006 Budget, Olympic governing bodies are required to demonstrate that their performance governance structures are sufficiently robust, to reduce the likelihood of wasted money.

Seven sports, including badminton, basketball, boxing and hockey, have failed to secure the first round of funding, due to ongoing problems with their respective administrations.

Basketball is undergoing a substantial review process to establish a new governing structure for the sport across the UK, while badminton is still working towards a GB system, although consideration is being given to allow Badminton England to take full delegated responsibility for British performance.

UK Sport chief executive John Steele said: "We're delighted that many sports with no history of managing such sums, like handball, have passed the first stage.

"While not in full receipt of their awards, some sports – such as hockey – have moved mountains to get to where they are now, with an agreed lead GB structure and performance plan for the full Olympic cycle in place for the very first time."
