Everton FC to establish a new Free School?
Everton in the Community - the official charity of Everton Football Club - has confirmed that it is to submit an expression of interest to the government to set up a Free School.
Its application to the Department of Education could see a new Liverpool institution set up to offer students and parents an increased choice in educational providers. Funded by central government, the charity would run the school on a day-to-day basis and use sport to engage pupils through what it has called an "alternative earning experience".
Open to youngsters aged between 14 and 19-years-old, Everton in the Community's Free School would be an extension of the charity's existing community programmes. Dr Denise Barrett-Baxendale, chief executive of Everton in the Community, said: "Our intention to explore an Everton in the Community Free School is based upon the desire to provide a high quality, inspirational and transformational educational experience.
"We wish to engage students with a new innovative approach to educational provision backed by the brand and values of Everton Football Club, which are already firmly embedded within our community scheme."
