A new publication unveiled by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) has found that well-managed tourism can help in the preservation of international wetlands.
Destination Wetlands: Supporting Sustainable Tourism was produced in partnership with the Ramsar Secretariat and was launched at a wetlands event in Bucharest, Romania.
According to the publication, wetlands such as Ba-Be Lake in Vietnam provide "significant opportunities" for tourism, which subsequently deliver benefits for local communities.
Such opportunities also contribute towards the sustainable management of wetlands, with a trend emerging among tourists of seeking more eco-friendly experiences.
Cristian Barhalescu, state secretary from the ministry of regional development and tourism of Romania, said: "There is a trend among tourists of turning towards destinations that offer wildlife and heritage."
