It is good to see so many significant developments that are helping to make Folkestone and other towns in Kent more attractive

The main contractor has been appointed for the construction of Urban Sports Park (USP) – a multi-level indoor skating complex in Folkestone, UK designed by Guy Holloway Architects.

The developer of the project, Shepway Sports Trust, has commissioned Westridge Construction to carry out the main work on the building, which received approval from the district council in February.

Preparations will take place soon for construction to begin, with a target date of late summer 2017 for completion. The site for the park is being provided by the Roger De Haan Charitable Trust, which is also funding the £10m (US$13.3m, €12m) cost of development and construction.

The USP – designed in collaboration with skate park specialists Maverick Industries – will incorporate facilities for skateboarding and scootering over seven configurable floors. It will also include a climbing wall over three storeys and halls for trial bike riding and boxing.

The structure will be clad in two layers of perforated mesh, creating natural ventilation for the skateable levels and giving the building a translucent glowing effect during the evenings.

“We are pleased to have been awarded this prestigious contract,” said Westridge Construction managing director Steve Phillips. “Being based locally, it is good to see so many significant developments that are helping to make Folkestone and other towns in Kent more attractive places in which to live and work, and we are proud that we can be part of this process.”
