Von Essen makes first overseas acquisition

04 Jan 2007

Von Essen Hotels, the privately owned UK company, has acquired its first overseas property – the Chateau de Bagnols near Lyon in France.

Von Essen bought the 13th century, 21-bedroom hotel from Lady Hamlyn – the widow of publisher Paul Hamlyn – for an undisclosed sum. However, The Times reported that the deal was around worth 25m euro (£17m).

Andrew Davis, chair of Von Essen, said: “We have planned to expand into Continental Europe for some time and are naturally delighted to be able to acquire one of the Continent’s most outstanding luxury hotels.

“2007 is set to be an exciting year for Von Essen with continued plans for expansion.”

Von Essen 23-strong portfolio already includes well-known properties such as the Cliveden in Berkshire, Thornbury Castle in Bristol and The Royal Crescent in Bath. Details: www.vonessenhotels.com
