International design firm WATG has been selected to create the first five-star resort on Flores Island, Indonesia.

The tropical getaway, which – once complete – will take the form of the region’s infamous reptilian indigene, the Komodo dragon, will be constructed on a 3.4-acre expanse on Waecicu Beach and will feature 192 rooms and 13 suites.

On-site guest amenities will include a 420sq m spa, six restaurants, two shoreside pools, and a 500sq m pier leading to a private diving centre.

Bill Reed, vice president of architecture at WATG, said the new hotel would be a "benchmark for future development" in the area that would reflect the "relaxed aesthetic of the Komodo Islands".

WATG, which was founded in 1945, has designed 240 properties worldwide.

AYANA Komodo will be the company’s third project to rise in Asia.
