Leisure centre saved thanks to council grant
A Wrexham leisure centre that was threatened with closure will remain open after local councillors agreed to pump £50,000 into the facility.
Plas Madoc, which is a community-run leisure facility, was facing closure at the end of December if Wrexham County Borough Council followed recommendations not to approve a grant application of £100,000 over a two-year period from Splash Community Trust.
However, councillors at an executive board meeting recommended a £50,000 grant.
The grant means that the trust will also receive £500,000 from the Welsh Government, which had been conditionally pledged.
The community trust said the money would go towards the building’s development, which has a swimming centre, a gym, cafe, sports hall and soft play area.
The trust took over the centre in 2014 and has increased visitor numbers to 400,000 each year.
