Mumbai hotels reopen to guests

By Pete Hayman    23 Dec 2008

Two luxury hotels in Mumbai, India – The Trident-Oberoi and the Taj Mahal Palace and Tower – have reopened less than a month after they were both targeted in a series of co-ordinated terrorist attacks on the city.

Armed gunmen held dozens of guests hostage at both hotels in the attacks which killed at least 170 people, while parts of the two properties remain closed after they were severely damaged by fire. The Indian Hotels Company, which owns the Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces brand, announced the reopening of rooms at the Taj Mahal Tower on 21 December. Raymond Bickson, managing director of the company, said: "We dedicate our reopening to the city of Mumbai as affirmation of the values of courage, resilience and dignity.

"To reopen the Taj with such speed but with no loss of attention to details, shows our resolve to commemorate all the innocent and brave people who lost their lives during the terrorist attacks. In their honour, the Taj will shine again in all its brilliance." The Trident-Oberoi also reopened on 21 December at Nariman Point, although the reopening of The Oberoi, Mumbai, another hotel damaged in the attacks, is yet to be confirmed.
