Controversial exhibition sparks violence

28 Mar 2002

The controversial Body Worlds exhibition provoked a hammer attack from a member of the public during its run in London.

The anatomical exhibition of human bodies, has attracted eight million visitors around the world, but caused controversy at its showing at the Atlantis Gallery, in London's East End.

A man was charged with causing criminal damage after smashing an exhibit called The Organ Man with a hammer. The man said he was outraged at the way human bodies had been turned into commercial objects.

The show's creator, Professor Gunther von Hagens, said the bodies belonged to people who wanted them to be made available for educational benefits.
