New sustainability education centre for Adelaide Zoo
A new AUS$2.5m (£1m, US$2m, 1.5m euro) environmental education centre is to be built at Adelaide Zoo in South Australia.
The Westpac Enviro Dome will replace the Ape Block at the zoo and will feature living and non-living displays, interactive activities and information about sustainable building and living, the environment, animals and conservation.
The centre, which will be powered by solar panels, will be funded by a state government contribution, which was matched by Westpac banking corporation. Shortfalls were made up by the zoo itself.
Adelaide Zoo is part of Zoos South Australia. Ruth Hall, education manager for Zoos SA, commented on the project: “Education is a key focus of Zoos South Australia with a strong schools education programme currently operating.
“The Westpac Enviro Dome will vastly improve facilities for school groups and will open up opportunities such as overnight programmes for secondary school and community groups.”
The Dome is expected to open in April next year. Details: www.adelaidezoo.com.au
