Wigan highlights cultural progress with new film
Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust (WLCT) has produced a short film to illustrate the contribution that leisure and culture makes to life in Wigan, Leigh and the surrounding area.
'Cultural Vibrancy: A CV for a Brighter Borough' was created in collaboration with the Cultural Partnership – which consists of local representatives from the public, private and voluntary sectors, led by WLCT – to highlight the Cultural Partnership’s new manifesto.
Narrated by writer and broadcaster Stuart Maconie, the film demonstrates Wigan Borough’s cultural progress – beginning in industrial times of coal mining and cotton mills and moving through to a behind the scenes look at the construction of the £83m Leigh Sports Village.
The Cultural Partnership's manifesto pinpoints a series of aspirations for cultural change in the Wigan Borough in the run up to 2012, including the designation of at least two additional local Nature Reserves; a modern library, swimming pool and leisure facility in Wigan town centre; and the implementation of a 10-year refurbishment plan for Mesnes Park.
John Hesketh, community regeneration manager for WLCT, said: "This DVD profiles Wigan Borough from a cultural perspective. We think it will improve awareness of culture and the role it plays and will spark debate and discussion among local people and our partners in the community, voluntary, public and private sectors. Everyone has a part to play in shaping future plans and we welcome involvement from all.
"The image of the borough has been revived in recent years; leisure and cultural activities have played a key role in changing previously negative perceptions for not only those who live and work here but with those who might choose to invest here. The DVD is an important tool to encourage activity, inspire pride and is proof that Wigan Borough is a place moving in the right direction."
