Wilderness launches Sanctuary spa at Wilderness Mombo in Botswana
Conservation and hospitality company, Wilderness, which specialises in safari camps and lodges, has launched its new spa concept called Sanctuary at Wilderness Mombo in Botswana.
Wilderness operates 60 camps in eight African countries and this new Sanctuary concept is part of a strategy to embed wellness more deeply across its portfolio.
One other property, Wilderness Bisate in Rwanda, is also expected to unveil its Sanctuary spa this year, in early 2026.
Architecture firm Black Sable has worked in collaboration with Artichoke Interior Design on the aesthetic for the spas at both properties.
The Sanctuary at Wilderness Mombo
Set in the heart of Botswana’s Okavango Delta, The Sanctuary at Wilderness Mombo has been designed to offer guests a way to balance energy and rest.
Alexandra Margull, Wilderness COO, said: “With this launch, we’re not simply adding or enhancing spa facilities to our camp; we’re strengthening our intention to create transformative journeys that nurture mind, body and soul. Mombo has always set the benchmark for the African safari – now, it’s helping redefine it.”
The 820sq m spa has four treatment rooms, one of which is a double.
There is a lap pool, sauna and ice bath as well as a gym, open-air yoga deck and meditation cocoons.
Guests can eat and drink at the spa’s deli and juice bar, alongside a Remedy Bar, which teaches guests about ancient healing traditions and local botanicals in storytelling sessions and rituals.
Treatments will incorporate African techniques and advanced skincare.
Biotechnology skincare company, Esse, will provide facials.
Products by TheraNaka will be infused with responsibly-sourced indigenous botanicals in combination with scents, sound therapy and touch during treatments.
Signature experiences at the spa will include treatments called:
• African Fusion Body Massage, using marula-herb oils;
• Tree of Life Journey, which is inspired by the baobab tree• Couples Connect, using handcrafted implements called “Swarthout” to offer a multi-sensory and culturally significant experience
Sound therapy
Sound composer Mikhaela Fae was commissioned by Wilderness to create an album called Sanctum, which plays in the spa.
The original soundscape was recorded during her stay at Mombo, capturing the rhythms and ambient sounds of the property. Sounds including a lion’s roar, the clash of elephant tusks and weaver birds singing have been combined with drums from the Boma.
The acoustic offering is designed to ground guests in the landscape.
