Worcester City unveils new stadium plans
Worcester City Football Club (WCFC) has unveiled its plans to move to a new stadium, which will be at the centre of a £30m mixed-use development.
Led by developer St Modwen, the project will be situated at Nunnery Way on the outskirts of the city, and will also include a new health and fitness centre, a 65-bedroom hotel, and a restaurant. The new stadium, designed by The Miller Partnership, is to be developed in three phases, and when complete will be able to hold more than 6,000 spectators with the potential to increase capacity further to 10,000.
As part of the first phase of work, a new 2,000-seat covered main stand will be built, including the main entrance, player facilities, a club shop, eight executive boxes and conference facilities capable of holding 350 people. A 1,200-capacity covered north terrace will also form part of the first phase, as well as additional uncovered terracing on the east and south sides of the stadium. Following the completion of the first phase of work, the ground will be capable of holding 4,400 spectators, and will meet entry requirements for the Blue Square Premier league.
The second phase of work will see the development of the South Terrace, increasing the ground's capacity to 5,120, while the third phase involves the development of the East Terrace to increase capacity to 6,120. Once complete, the stadium will also meet requirements for entry into the Football League. WCFC, which currently plays in the Blue Square North league, hopes that the stadium will secure the long-term future of the club. The club's current ground at St. George's Lane will also undergo redevelopment.
Planning applications for both the stadium and the mixed-use facilities will be submitted to Worcester City Council shortly, before undergoing a period of consultation. A decision is expected from the council on the plans in early 2009.
